As a long-time resident of Murfreesboro, I’ve witnessed our community’s growth and the challenges that come with it. One pressing issue that has garnered significant attention is the proposed expansion of the Middle Point Landfill.
Ongoing Odor Complaints
Over the past decade, residents have filed numerous complaints about the landfill’s odor. The city has received over 4,000 such complaints, with some coming from as far as seven miles away. The persistent smell has affected our quality of life and raised concerns about potential health implications.
Environmental Violations
Beyond the odor, the landfill has faced multiple environmental violations. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) issued seven violations in a ten-month span, some related to the Clean Water Act. Given the landfill’s proximity to our water supply, these violations are particularly alarming.
Proposed Expansion and Legal Actions
In response to these issues, the landfill’s operators proposed a 70-foot vertical expansion, which would add approximately 19 million tons of waste. This proposal has been met with resistance from the city. In December 2025, Murfreesboro filed a lawsuit against BFI Waste Systems, accusing them of attempting to bypass state law and local review processes. By February 2026, a Davidson County Chancery Court judge ordered TDEC to halt the review of the expansion, emphasizing the need for local oversight and public input.
Community Impact
The landfill’s operations and proposed expansion have sparked widespread concern among residents. The combination of persistent odors, environmental violations, and the potential for increased waste capacity has led many to question the landfill’s management and its impact on our community’s well-being.
As we navigate this complex issue, it’s crucial for residents to stay informed and engaged. Our collective voice plays a vital role in shaping the future of Murfreesboro and ensuring that our community remains a safe and pleasant place to live.
